CRITIC - PAINTING (Eng)
The author, Mina Shim, has indicated that every individual needs its own personal space for solitude, as discussed in the context of <Transparenzgesells -chaft> by Byung-Chul Han. She has initiated this series due to her profound weariness with the surplus of unproductive time and overwhelming deluge of violent data in the modern superfluous society. The inception of this series can be traced back to the author’s personal contemplation and her endeavor to disengage herself from the overflowing data and inundation of images which happened in the post-media society. She commences the process of eliminating to entirely concentrate on her inner emotions, manifesting them through visual imagery. The core essence of this endeavor lies in dedicating time to introspection through the art of brush strokes, which simultaneously erase, empty, and leave traces.
In this modern society, everything often appears superfluous. It is essential to allocate time for oneself to break free from this overflowing condition. Through the act of inner reflection and vacating, we gain the insight to perceive our inner state more clearly and engage in thoroughly self-introspection. Creating and drawing not only leave traces but also serve to erase and eliminate disruptions, allowing for comprehensive control over one’s intrinsic thoughts.
Focusing more on external factors rather than inner ones, which are the most important aspect of life, has led to neglecting the management of one’s intrinsic state. Author, Mina Shim, offers a necessary space for solitude, where individuals can avoid interruptions. In our modern lives, there is often little room for tending to our inner selves due to incessant external stimuli. Her abstract art pieces provide a precious opportunity for contemporary people to reflect and delve into their intrinsic state. Abstract art is often perceived as challenging to interpret, but in reality, there is no definitive answer to interpret it, allowing individuals to engage with it freely. On one hand, viewers can engage in introspection and connect with their inner experiences. On the other hand, they can undergo emotional transitions as they relate the colors in the artwork to their personal memories and recollections. This art provides a space for spectators to engage in sincere and personal inner dialogues.
Like other pieces of abstract art, a series featuring the backside of a canvas plays a significant role in promoting introspection. This concept is fundamentally rooted in the observation that in modern society, people often prioritize their appearances, neglecting their inner status, which holds far greater importance. The series depicting the backsides of canvases serves as a reminder of the significance of examining the hidden aspects of one’s self, much like the neglected backside of a canvas can symbolize the stories of individuals who focus solely on the front while overlooking what lies behind.
